March 4, 2011
Hi all!
Last week I talked about
FINISHED PROJECTS.
This week, I'd like to
talk about WORKS IN PROGRESS.
We have just 6
Block-A-Month spots still available in
The Joy of Life -
Written as a 9-part sampler, it can be stitched using either the needle-turn or blanket stitch appliqué techniques.
We
are LIMITING the number of kits we cut, so order soon.
http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=25553
You can join the class,
receive the kits by mail or just pick them up in the store.
The JOY OF LIFE monthly KIT price
includes pattern & fabric for top.
You can order this with or without the class.

In class, Mary will teach a
variety of appliqué methods, hand and machine. The class meets 1st Thursdays at 10 a.m. & 7 p.m.
Third class will meet April 7.

Pictured above are
Mary's first 2 JOY
OF LIFE blocks. She's selected a variety of fabrics to
use in this quilt, but many are from Maywood's new line, MEMORIES OF
LOVE.
See our selection here,
including a FAT QUARTER BUNDLE, 1 each of the entire line.

I have several current
projects spread about my sewing room.
I'm
pleased with the progress of TONGA
RHAPSODY. Working with BATIKS
& HAND-DYED fabrics is so exciting. The unique quality
of each cut piece makes piecing the blocks an exercise in randomness
or an extra effort at control!
I'm posting my progress
on this quilt in my TIPS
section. Click here to see all my TIPS and photos of my work:

Last week, many of you
asked, as I'd failed to mention, which pattern Ruth used to make her
quilt.
We
do have the QUILT-AS-YOU-GO pattern that Ruth used with AMY BUTLER SOUL BLOSSOMS fat
quarter bundle from
Westminster Fabrics.

FLIPPED
OVER HINGING is a "hinge
& flip" technique of "quilt as you go" from
Butterfly Express.
http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=26720
This technique uses finishing
strips to cover the seams that join the individually quilted blocks.
As well as this pattern,
we also carry several books
that have complete step-by-step instructions for a variety of
QUILT-AS-YOU-GO techniques.
Check out Marti
Michell's MACHINE QUILTING IN SECTIONS for 6 different "quilt as
you go" techniques and lots of other tips.

Another fun book, CRAZY
QUILT SHORTCUTS, also uses the finishing strips technique to
join blocks that are already fully quilted. Check out the book
here:

I think I have this link
working now, so check out the authors'
video here:
Crazy Shortcut Quilts
VIDEO
This quilt comes packed
like a giant CANDY
BAR - a SODUKO puzzle comes tucked inside with 81 fabric square,
ready to be used to solve the puzzle. Make 9 blocks and you're
almost done!
What a fun SODUKO
project to do with a friend, of any age, quilter or otherwise!
Mary's sister Kathy solved the SODUKO
PUZZLE and stitched it. Her sister Helen quilted it on her
long-arm.
But this small quilt could easily be a QUILT AS
YOU GO project, using the small sashings as the finishing strips.
