Hi all!

When your kids are grown, or if you don't have any kids of your own, do you still "feel" the rhythm of the school year?  The "old-fashioned" school year has sure stuck with me!  I've always felt like September was the time to start "fresh", even more so than January!  So HAPPY NEW YEAR!   :)

I guess I'm not the only one to look back nostalgically at my early school days!  The wonderful DICK & JANE fabric which reproduces the look of the old readers on fabric, is very POPULAR.  The first fabrics proved so popular, that Michael Miller has introduced even more prints to go with the original releases from last fall.
Check out our selection, as always, available by the yard and in fat quarters:

http://www.sewnatural.com/nl.asp?p=0&c=124

Another hit of the summer have been the new Clover YO-YO makers.  Wondering what to do with all those YO-YOs you've been making all summer?  Check out these darling pillow patterns!

The new CRABAPPLE HILL department is full of many new patterns, including the 4 seasons embroidery pillows!   ("Spring" will be introduced this fall! :))

http://www.sewnatural.com/nl.asp?p=0&c=140

Living in Newton we have nothing to complain about from this summer.  Unlike much of the rest of the country, the weather has been moderate by our standards.  But I'm still looking forward to Fall!

Maywood Studios - Leaves - Fall Leaves with Maroon & Cream Stripe

Our selection of FALL & AUTUMN fabrics has never been better! Kits are available and yardage from several different designers including Leaves from Jackie Robinson featuring her "famous" SPLIT STRIPE, Arbor Hills from Sentimental Studios and Harvest Bouquet from Deb Strain among others!  Be sure to browse both AUTUMN & NEWEST ADDITIONS departments.

I searched "LEAVES" in the web store and was surprised by how many pages came up!  We have QUITE the variety!  Have fun browsing!  :)

I bought the fabric line BEBOP from P&B with my musician Lily in mind!  Sure enough, she whipped up an ipod holder to take her new video ipod back to school.  We used a magnetic snap on hers, but decided we might like a button better, so check out my version, complete with BETTY BOOP button!  How cute!

And, speaking of "cute", JELLY ROLLS hit the quilt market with a blast about a year ago.

Now, Moda has introduced some really clever packaging for these collections of 2-1/2" wide fabric strips.

Packaged in this darling lunch box tin with a window, plus a unique pattern using the strips packed inside, is the newest "Moda To Go" -
SHANGRI LA  3 Sisters collection.

Also includes this great quilt pattern.  Just add background & border fabrics to the Jelly Roll and you've got it!

I just think the packed tin is sooooo CUTE, that I HAD to have one for my sewing room!

Very limited supply, so order today!

Before Lily left for school she made this fun TABLE TOPPER (or, when slit, it may become a Christmas TREE SKIRT).  I did have it quilted and finished binding it myself (I used Liqui-Fuse - see TIPS) and it turned out quite nice!  I used the HOLLY JOLLY panel fabric on the back so it "turns over" nicely!

Order a kit  for this 2007 THANGLES CHRISTMAS TREE SKIRT today!

Not familiar with THANGLES?  Go to my TIPS page, click on THANGLES.

Well, Lily's classes started yesterday at Cottey College.  She had a very non-taxing day - only one class, but it was Calculus!  She called me in the afternoon and is working on another model for us. She's making square-in-a-square units using charm squares and needed help with the corner triangles.  Here's what I suggested to make her workload easier & faster than folding all those triangles in half to match the sides of the squares - I suggested trimming off the points so they match the side of the square perfectly.

Check out the FONS & PORTER TRIANGLE TRIMMER.

Also "back to school", my sister Eleanor has started her new job, teaching at SUNY- New Paltz.  She sent me her Costume 1 class syllabus.  Not only are they going to make MASCOTS out of THE CUTE BOOK, but they're going to make TRAVEL PILLOWS using my TIDY TRAVEL PILLOW CASE pattern!  Thanks E!  Her syllabus make me wonder whether she missed her calling all these years - she "sounds" like a natural teacher! :)

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=7264

I'll close with this wonderful HARVEST BOUQUET wall hanging - we love sunflowers!

The center of this QUILT IS PRINTED, right up to the "gold" border.  The gold border was created using Quiltsmart's BROADWAY BORDER interfacing, which is machine appliquéd to the red border fabric.  The 4 stars in the corners are pieced.  Use this picture of ours as inspiration or create your own.  Our kit includes plenty of fabric, even for backing.

Demand has been great for this fast and elegant wall quilt.  We just received more panels and Mary has cut more kits!  Order today.

Hope your August is ending well!  Stop in and see us if you can.  My goal is to REFRESH the store (and make some more room) by moving all the fabrics around this weekend!  :)

We will be CLOSED MONDAY, LABOR DAY.

AND - If you think you'd like to join our Saturday Sept. 15th QUILTERS' BORDER CROSSING BUS TRIP to OKLAHOMA, please check out the details here:

Hope to see you soon!

Have a great, safe weekend!

August 16, 2007

Hi all!

On the phone this weekend, my sister mentioned that she and her 6-year-old son, Alex, were going to make felt "mascots" from a new "sewing" book called THE CUTE BOOK.  I love it!  She sews for a living, she's spending a week at the beach in Florida and still she's spending quality time sewing with her son!  Well, the book sounded interesting, so this morning I started doing some on-line research.  Found I could order it from one of my distributors, and offer it now to you:

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12847

Influenced by Japanese animation that seems to be inspiring many young adults, these little stuffed felt critters are really quite fun and very "kawaii".  They kind of remind me of stuff from my childhood ('50s & early '60s).  Eleanor (younger than me) starts a new job next week.  Her new job will involve teaching college students to sew costumes.  THE CUTE BOOK may be her new text book for a hand-sewing lesson!  Great idea Eleanor!

Wondering what the "youngsters" of the quilting industry have been up to lately, I decided to revisit some of their blogs.  My cumulative reaction:  "It's hard to feel/be hip/cool/kawaii(?) in Newton, KS."  Oh well, I'm not sure at 52 I'm going to be really "hip" anywhere anymore.  :)

OK,  I do enjoy buying and sewing with the new "hip" fabrics, and love the "new" (actually, retro-re-visited) stuff that these "youngsters" are (re-)introducing to the industry with their own flair & excitement.  Hey, back-up one paragraph, if I may say so myself, I do have the best selection of hip/new/fresh/retro fabrics I've ever seen in one store, right here at Charlotte's Sew Natural!  So, wait, don't write off a 52-year old in small town mid-America so quickly!  We might be COOL in our own way even if we aren't sure what "kawaii" means!

Designer Heather Bailey is young and at the moment very "hot" and cool!  I keep seeing Heather's FRESH CUT fabrics
(from Free Spirit) being used by others in their new pattern designs and in magazines too.  She is an excellent example of the new "young" energy happening in the quilt/sewing world!  Right here at Charlotte's Sew Natural you can buy yardage, fat quarters.

Check out our entire selection of Heather Bailey's fabrics here, 10% OFF for a limited time:

http://www.sewnatural.com/nl.asp?p=0&c=111

Further perusing Heather's blog, I couldn't help noticing that we share many of the same names in our lives! Charlotte, Lily, elinor (close enough to Eleanor) and Isaac!  I'm not sure what this means!  Oh well, enough with random ramblings!

More of Heather's work (simple pattern for a great vintage pin cushion) can be found in the BHG Summer 2007 QUILTS AND MORE magazine. See it in the lower right-hand corner?  Order a copy for yourself right here:

http://www.sewnatural.com/nl.asp?p=0&c=141

This issue has lots of good projects in it.  Other projects I like in particular include a great quilt using STRIPES.  I just checked my web store and it says we have 187 fabrics when you search "stripe".  According to our point-of-sale computer in the store we have 287 different striped fabrics!  So, come into the store if you can, there are at least 100 more!  I like stripes!  I also love this simple HOLLYHOCK wall hanging - sort of an "art quilt".  Both these pieces would look great in my house. [I think I should mention that, unlike in the table in the magazine photograph, I don't have a single uncluttered surface in my house but I still think the quilt would look great on my wall!]

My daughter Lily was busy last week filling in at the store and preparing for a garage sale but still managed to sew up two new store models.  First she stitched the new 2007 THANGLES CHRISTMAS TREE SKIRT.  This is done with 5" THANGLES and about 2 yards of fabric.  I changed the instructions a bit (of course!) and have bound it with a third fabric, bringing the total yardage to 2-1/8 yards! :)

You can order it here:  (Sorry, the pattern is not available without the Thangles or a fabric kit.)

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12849

Then Lily brought home a CHARM PACK from Moda's new SCAREDY CAT line - thirty-three 5" squares with fun "retro" patterns & colors from designers Polly Minick & Lauri Simpson.  When she finally settled on a pattern from the book HOOKED ON CHARMS she did have to get 2 more packs, but whipped up this cute wall-hanging in no time at all!  When I suggested she quilt it she replied "but mom, you have stuff quilted by someone else!"  Oh well, they do learn from what we do, not what we say!  I guess I might quilt it for her.  After all, it's not too big.  :)

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12850

See the entire SCAREDY CAT line here:

http://www.sewnatural.net/nl.asp?s=scaredy

LaVerna (remember, she retired some time back. :) ) was working last week and was inspired to finish off this new panel, also from Moda, HARVEST BOUQUET.  It is a beautiful sunflower in a vase.  LaVerna used BROADWAY BORDERS from Quiltsmart and pieced 4 small stars for the corners, creating a delightful, seasonal wall quilt!

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12851

See all the HARVEST BOUQUET fabrics here:

http://www.sewnatural.net/nl.asp?s=harvest+bouquet

I did the same thing with the STAR OF WONDER panel from Benartex.  You can order it here:

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12852

Lily returns to school at the end of this week.  Her first days will be spent "team building" with the other Cottey College Peer Listeners and RAs.  They are going to start with a "field trip" to The Edge Challenge Course, near Lake of the Ozarks.  According to the email there are "two towers, one with a rock wall and zip line and the other with “The Screamer”, connected by several elements.  This unique course employs the use of climbing harnesses, ropes, and other hardware to navigate elements as high as 40 feet off the ground."  She is very excited about this.  I, who get out of bed every morning doing stretching exercises attempting to touch my toes, am glad it is her, and not me on this team!  What happened to getting to know each other over a cup of coffee?  LOL

"Youth" is wonderful, and "fresh" ideas, that may come from any age, can be just the thing to break our inertia or create new bonds!  In homage to a woman who contributed fresh ideas for many, many years before her death at age 98, check out this, one of our newest arrivals from ALEXANDER HENRY FABRICS - GEORGIA!  Georgia O'Keefe was nearly 40 (!) when she started looking at and painting flowers differently.  Her legacy is more than her beautiful paintings - many have come to appreciate the beauty in everyday things around us because she painted!

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12579

I'll leave you with this great quote:

Nobody sees a flower, really, it is so small. We haven't time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time.

If I could paint the flower exactly as I see it no one would see what I see because I would paint it small like the flower is small. So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers.

...Well, I made you take time to look at what I saw and when you took time to really notice my flower you hung all your own associations with flowers on my flower and you write about my flower as if I think and see what you think and see of the flower - and I don't.
                                                                                        - Georgia O'Keeffe

May you feel free to be yourself, do things your own way and feel great doing it no matter your age!

Have a great week! Hope to see or hear from you soon!

Sincerely,
Charlotte Wolfe

August 2, 2007

Hi all!

"Like sands through the hour-glass, so are the days of our lives."
Oh my!  Happy August!

We've had a busy summer here in the store.  We've met many more of our "web" customers, as you've made your way across the state and across the country.  We love putting faces to names, so please introduce yourselves if/when you get here!

Looking back on the past few weeks, we had a fabulous SMART-EASE SUMMER SCHOOL.  If you missed that, you can still check out all the wonderful QUILTSMART products on our web site.

http://www.sewnatural.com/nl.asp?p=0&c=133

The CELL PHONE BAG is new and a big hit.  It also holds an I-POD perfectly! :)   Uses just 1/4 yard to make one, or 2 fat quarters makes a contrasting lining and is enough for 2 bags.

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12392

Another one of the "hottest" items continues to be the SMART-EASE FLYING GEESE for finished 2" x 4" geese.

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=10956

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12327

I also FINISHED a delightful DOUBLE-WEDDING RING runner that I'd had in mind for some time.  We have the fabrics and would love to send you a kit "including fabric"!  I made the arcs using a striped floral, saving lots of time!  The picture of my runner shows the difference between "plain" machine quilting (center block) and filling in the background with close stipple quilting.  This is the easiest type of stipple quilting to do and oh, what a difference it makes.  The quilting looks so much richer!

I used GOLDEN THREADS paper to reproduce my pattern on each block.  I traced once, stitched through 3 layers with an unthreaded needle, and then stitched through the paper and removed after quilting.

Just last weekend we had a fun "school" BUS TRIP from Oklahoma.  Thank you to all of you who made that such a fun time!

Not ready to give up on summer?!  Our new "exclusive" batiks say SUMMER to me!  I just love this new color in the SUNFLOWER/WHEAT BATIK.

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12409

The HEDGE APPLES BATIK in the chartreuse is fabulous!

http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12411

These new colors of our exclusive Kansas batiks are only available from CHARLOTTE'S SEW NATURAL!  I had these made just for us and the supply is limited, so order today.  "Exclusive" fabrics make great gifts for your quilting friends who have it all!

In June we launched BUCK-A-BLOCK series 4.  Featuring 2" THANGLES, each month, kits are available which include 2 strips of fabric for the block plus the block pattern.  A finishing kit is available for each of the 3 color ways.

The block kits are available in the store each month for $1.  Just one $1 kit per customer.  Additional kits are $3 and $3 after the month of their initial issue.

They are available by mail, but for a slightly different deal.  Choose from:

  1. For $10 a month we'll mail all 3 fabric combinations (batik, red/tan, black/white) plus a pattern each month for 12 months.  If you want to pick them up in the store, the same 3 will cost you $7 plus tax, so basically, we're charging you $3 shipping & handling, and asking you to commit to the entire 12 months.  You can let us know if you want to order finishing kits for any or all of the colors. They are approx. $100 for the sashing, borders & binding.

    http://www.sewnatural.net/nli.asp?iid=12654

  2. If you just want 1 color-way, for $142.99 complete, we'll mail you the finishing kit for a large queen-size quilt, Thangles & monthly kits that have already been issued.  Then we'll send you one block kit each month as they are issued, so you can still enjoy making one block a month. You could possibly have your setting ready to go when you finish that last block! :)

Lily goes back to school in just a little more than 2 weeks and I definitely feel the "sands" falling away from me!  We've had a great summer so far, even managing to finish (& start :) ) quite a respectable number of projects!

Despite all the "hype", remember, there's really no "rush".  So take your time, enjoy each day and even if your life seems terribly busy, may you find some time to at least do a little sewing!

Hope to see you soon!

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Charlotte Wolfe
