Charlotte's Sew Natural, downtown, we're celebrating INTERNATIONAL
QUILTING DAY, Saturday March 16th. Details here:
We know (& hope)
that Spring is coming. (The time change is upon us!) Many of us start looking towards the
garden about now. When I stick a shovel in my dirt, I always
think, "How did the pioneers do this?"
I must admit, I love
anything to do with PIONEER WOMEN! How they managed to garden is
one of my lesser questions! :)
I believe the
fascination stems from my incredible admiration for women who had the
talent and fortitude to overcome the most incredible circumstances
presented by the American wilderness.
digress, but have you read Letters
of a Woman Homesteader, by Elinore Pruitt Stewart? If not,
try to find a copy. Loved it! Or check out the movie,
HEARTLAND, based on her stories.
I can't believe my good
fortune of landing in Kansas more than 30 years ago - in the HEART of
PIONEER COUNTRY! LOL
One of the things I love about Kansas
the friendly people. History says it wasn't always this way!
I recently discovered The
All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton: A Novel by Jane
Smiley, and highly recommend it. Set in Kansas Territory
(Bleeding Kansas) just before the Civil War!
Also a fan of tales of the Oregon
Trail, I was excited when I got to go to
the quilt show in Sisters, Oregon. Oh, the mountains!
McGregor, the artist who has created many of the Outdoor Quilt Show
posters, is working to self-publish his latest book, raising funds a
new way. It looks very interesting! DREAM
AGAIN, a children's book about pioneering. Beautifully
illustrated, the main "characters" are actually a girl, a quilt, and a horse!
I've never supported a KICK-STARTER
project before, but this is cool. Check it out here. Let's
get this book published!
Once published, I'll
able to offer this book for sale in the store, but
for now I'm so intrigued with this fund raising technique for
self-publishing, that I'm willing to loose a few sales to make sure it
gets published at all! Plus those who get it early will tell
their friends to come buy it at Charlotte's, right? :)
am not a "farm girl", but I love Mary
Janes Farm magazine. Order the past two issues together and
I'll throw in a fat quarter to cover some of the postage!
FARMHOUSE by Felicity Miller for Free Spirit
Fabric captures the feeling of a different sort of pioneer &
Charleston, a Sussex farmhouse at the foot of the South Downs in England,
was a shared vision of the Bloomsbury group, artists, writers, and philosophers in the first half of the twentieth century.
Walls, doors, furniture, fireplaces, were canvases for the decorative works of
artists Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and friends.
Influenced by a visit to the farmhouse, Felicity Miller has produced a fabric collection
full of the play of paint, pattern and color. Old yet
of "choosing backyard chicken" (see Mary Janes Farm Magazine
above), have you seen all our latest CHICKEN & ROOSTER FABRICS?! Ducks?
Geese? Crows? Owls? So many to choose from!
