 May 4, 2012

Hi all!

Happy Friday!  We had a great time last weekend, meeting so many new and old friends on the Happy Trails bus tour!

They had fun SHOPPING!  We cut & cut & cut, and still have more fabric! :)  So come on in soon!

If you or your group would like to organize a TOUR that includes one or both of my stores, please feel free to contact me.  We'd love to accomodate you.

I had about 7 staff members at all times, 2 cash registers, plus Lily & Sylvia learned how to CATER!  Yes, we fed nearly 300 lunches & dinners in 3 days!

Everyone said it was all "yummy". Whew!

But REALLY, if you want GOOD FOOD, you must go to my friends, Amanda's & Gwen's, new restaurant in the Flint Hills - AD ASTRA FOOD AND DRINK in Strong City, KS!

It is awesome!  Here is a shot (only 2 months ago!) looking out of the old building they bought and renovated (with tons of help from family & friends!).  So cool!

AD ASTRA opened the weekend before last.  Their food is fresh, fun and delicious.  The first weekend, they went through 75 pounds of potatoes which were hand peeled, sliced and fried into potato chips!  Really?!  LOL

Facebook comments all contain adjectives like "perfect", "slammed", "packed",  and "excellent".  I concur on all!  We've already been there twice and plan on stopping this Sunday on our way home from the Royals baseball game.  They have perfect hours for us!  Only open Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.   Check them out on facebook.!/pages/Ad-Astra-Food-and-Drink/228372467250614

Strong City (pop. 527) is right on US Hwy 50.  If you're in their "neighborhood", you'll want to allow time to head 15 miles south on the KANSAS SCENIC BY-WAY, Hwy 177, to PIONEER BLUFFS

Pioneer Bluffs is an historic ranch right at the center of the Flint Hills – the largest expanse of untilled tallgrass prairie in North America.

Founded by the Rogler family in 1859, Pioneer Bluffs is a real landmark. The ranch was designated a National Register Historic District in 1992.

The web site (which is in the process of being updated and refreshed) is:

My good friend Susan, a Rogler descendant, and her family still operate the Sauble Ranch, another historic Flint Hills property, and has been very involved with promoting and developing the accessibility of Pioneer Bluffs for visitors.

Some of you might remember my story of taking Susan on a trip "out of town", while her family prepared a SUPRISE birthday party for her.  Well, my "rouse", was to go find some quilts painted on barns in Nebraska.  We didn't find any!

But I got her interested in the concept, and look what she made happen at PIONEER BLUFFS on their historic barn!  Yea Susan!  And she's got plans for other barns in the Flint Hills, so keep an eye out!

Check out Eleanor Burns' book, QUILT BLOCKS ON AMERICAN BARNS, for more inspiration from other parts of the country!

Just in time, for all your late-Spring & early-Summer COW-BABIES, check out SADDLE-UP from Riley Blake Designs.   Comes in two color-ways, perfect for EVERYONE!

I'm going to simply use the two fabrics and quilt between the BANDANAS, for a fast, IN-A-DAY, quilt!

Since I'm a real "cow-girl wannabe", who doesn't even ride a horse, LOL, be sure to keep an eye on our WESTERN department for lots of interesting stuff.

And even though I don't speak French, in another one of my "fantasy lives", I live in PARIS!  Oui! :)

So, I have a tendency to purchase fabric with a FRENCH THEME like CURTAIN CALL.

See my latest project, a MINI-MESSENGER BAG, made with this great VINTAGE PARIS print CANVAS.  I recommend 3/4 yard to allow for some fussy cutting.

The pattern can be seen here, and also the perfect hardware for the convertible strap!  Shown on the left doubled up for easy over-the-shoulder wear, and on the right, extended for comfy, across-the-body hip-riding!

Newest Additions to the web can always be seen here:

We just received LOVE LETTERS from LAUNDRY BASKET QUILTS, designed by Edyta Sitar for Moda Fabrics.  They are gorgeous.

And it is hard to find more inspiration in one place than you'll find on Edyta's blog:

She has been combining PRINTS & BATIK fabrics for years, and her quilts are sooooo gorgeous.

See all her latest fabrics here:

And find her unique patterns, books, templates & half-square triangle papers here:

COMING SOON, her latest innovation, already cut appliqué shapes with fusible web on one side!  Yes, we'll have SILHOUETTES very soon!

The weather here continues nice for gardening.  Although the forecast for the next couple of days is HOT!

I like hanging baskets, the kind you buy already planted!  I do like digging in the dirt some, but I don't like weeding, and I don't like watering.  Seems like that just encourages the weeds!  LOL

If you are in to FLOWERS but not gardening, check out Renee Nanneman's newest group for Andover, BELLA BLISS!  I just LOVE it!

We continue to build and enlarge our BASICS, including 100% cotton solid colors.  Soon, I'll even show you what I'm doing with them! :)

Hope to see you soon.
Have a great week-end!
