Hi all!

Happy August!

My what an unusual summer we've had.  And for our part of Kansas, it has been good! :)  Things are really growing, all looks good, and we're not exhausted from the heat, which leaves me energy and enthusiasm for creative pursuits.

I think it is still good weather for sewing!  The 2 rainy days earlier this week really were perfect for staying inside and getting things done.  I did feel sorry for others, and remembered to be thankful that I didn't have to clean up after a flood!

Today we received a fabulous TRUNK SHOW from KERI DESIGNS.

These large wall quilts are interpretations (with permission & royalties paid) of Charley Harper's designs.  They are really stunning!

Charley Harper (1922-2007) was a self-described modern realist artist.  "Instead of trying to put everything in when I paint, I try to leave everything out."  Keri Duke has kept this spirit while translating his artwork into patterns to be rendered in fabric.  Great detail, but not too much!

Come see these quilts for yourself.  They are a real treat!  Full-size patterns sell for $30 each and for a limited time, we have some wonderful hand-dyed fabric kits from Cherrywood Fabrics.  The quilts will be here most of the month of August, but don't wait too long, as our supply of patterns and kits is limited.

There is even a truly delightful Giraffe mother/baby quilt on display, for which we are taking pre-orders.  The pattern is expected to publish in September.

See them here to order on-line:

I've been having fun making small HARVEST MOON wall quilts.

I started out with one idea, and the "rejects" from choosing those fabrics led to another one, and then I moved on to a more "traditional" look.  Sooooo . . . we've got 3 new ones, and the ever-popular batik Sunflowers that we've been selling for a while too.  Watch for more, as I've got the "fever".  :)

We've cut kits for each variation, including re-cutting the SUNFLOWER border fabric kit.  Hope you like at least one of them! :)

You can get just one pattern and any number of fabric kits.

Order here, or stop in the store to save postage:

Currently my favorite fusible web is STEAM-A-SEAM 2.  It worked great for these quilts.

Check out my tutorial, as I've taken lots of pictures of my process and included some explanations here:

With many contributors, we've been finishing up all sorts of new models for the store.

We just hung TURK MOUNTAIN, done in STONEHENGE CANYON RIDGE fabrics.  Great HORSES!  Very much a "guy" or girl quilt!

Kit available in the store and here:

What with all the rain we've had here our Flint Hills cowgirls and cowboys are riding high in green this summer - grass, that is!

Check out this FUN group - COWGIRL UP!  Makes you want to do the two-step just looking at it!  :)

You have a great chance to get out in the FLINT HILLS this weekend!  See the beautiful scenery and visit Pioneer Bluffs, founded in 1859 as the Rogler Ranch, and now open to the public.

I'd just heard about, and I've been meaning to feature the new KANSAS QUILT TRAIL initiative in my newsletter, when I got this invitation!

At 1:30 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, August 3, everyone is invited to PIONEER BLUFFS in the heart of the Flint Hills for a free discussion on BARN QUILTS AND THE BARN QUILTS TRAIL.

I know there are many of you interested in this, and some of you have even talked about your own "barn quilt" projects while here in the store!

This Prairie Talk will cover the history of barn quilt trails, where to find barn quilts, and step-by-step instruction on building a barn quilt and adding it to the trail.

Pioneer Bluffs is an historic ranch located about one hour east of Newton, or one hour north of Wichita.

From the Cassoday exit on the Turnpike, take Hwy 177 north 11 miles. Pioneer Bluffs lies on the east side of Hwy 177 and is at the north end of a mile-long limestone fence.

I feel some slight pride and responsibility, as I was the one who originally put the "bug" in Susan Hague's ear which lead to the BARN QUILT hanging on the Pioneer Bluffs' barn!  Susan is a quilter, cowgirl, Rogler descendant and current Pioneer Bluffs board member.  So be careful, no matter how busy you think you are, you never know how much further one of my "good ideas" is going to take you!  LOL

Also, Quilt In A Day QUILT BLOCKS on American BARNS:

While these blocks would look great on the side of any building, they're also going to make a smashing quilt!  (Still a mystery finish to be revealed. :) )

Go ahead, start BUCK A BLOCK! You know you like it. :)

The 2nd block in our newest BUCK A BLOCK, is still available for just $1 through August 6th.  The Bonus kit includes a "solid gold" fabric this month and is just $3.99.  You'll want the instructions for the "bonus" found in the June kit, which is also still available.

The monthly BLOCK KIT for a BUCK to be picked up in the store, will contain 1 white strip & one black strip, and each month a different block pattern to make a 7-inch finished block.  You'll also need a package of 1.75" Thangles.

Each new month's kits become available the first Wednesday of the month (August 7th).  The previous month's kits continue while supplies last, at $2/block kit and $3.99/bonus kit for past months.

BONUS KITS will be available each month, to make the block larger, finishing at 14".  Each month's bonus kit will feature a different solid color, as well as a different black/white print.  You'll always use the same pattern (available in the first month's kit which has solid purple fabric - Go Cats!) to make the units which are added to the 7-inch block.  The strips will be cut to size.  These kits cost $3.99.  You'll also need 3.5" Thangles.

See the entire selection of THANGLES sizes here:

BUCK-A-BLOCK may be MAIL ORDERED.  $8.49/monthly includes postage or just $4.99 when added to any other order that month.

We anticipate "revealing" my finishing suggestion in August.  So stay tuned to see what my finished quilt will look like, and you'll have an opportunity to order the finishing kit too! :)

We will be starting a new, year-long QUILT SAMPLER CLASS in September at Charlotte's Sew Natural.

 Mary will be teaching

using Marti Michell's pattern & templates.

Mary selects fabrics she will be using, and a limited number of kits will be available with fabrics like her quilt.

Most students make unique quilts with our help selecting the fabrics.

This makes each class meeting especially fun, seeing the same quilt block done in such a variety of fabrics.  Maybe you'd like to do it in Christmas fabrics and create an heirloom to be brought out annually?  We'll be happy to help you select the perfect fabrics!

Beginner to expert level students welcome.  (Beginners must know how to use a sewing machine, but all other skills will be covered in as much depth as you require.)

Starts Thursday September 19th

Meets - 3rd Thursdays  through August 2014

Choose 10 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. class time.

Lecture/demo lasts about an hour.  $48 plus materials.

September also marks the start of an APPLIQUÉ BLOCK A MONTH quilt class.

 Mary will be teaching

which combines piecing and appliqué for a fun HALLOWEEN quilt.

Suitable for confident beginners through experts!

Meets - 2nd Thursdays  through February 2014

Choose 1:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. class time.
